The first chapter in Peter Jackson's new epic trilogy set in Middle Earth 60 years before J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings saga. Follow Bilbo Baggins as he's swept into a quest to reclaim the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached by the wizard Gandalf, Bilbo joins a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield. Along the way they face many dangers; Bilbo meets Gollum and takes possession of the 'One Ring.'

Not a bad movie worth watching

I found it a fun movie but it does not follow the book very well and it adds many things to it that aren't in the book.

Don’t bother.
Peter Jackson has crafted lush, dense, authentic, magnificent videos
of each book of the Lord of the Rings trilogy,
true to both the spirit and details of Tolkien’s monumental text.
The Hobbit, prequel to the saga,
became a pointless clownish cartoon under Jackson’s direction.
I’m surprised the cast didn’t mutiny.
Just read the book,
or listen to the audiobook narrated by Rob Inglis.
Much, much better than this silly video.

Loved the book but some of it got lost in the making. It was made after LOTR but the CG's didn't seem as good. The actors did fine with their roles but they seemed a little flat. Not sure if it's a good or bad indication of the next movie. Overall, glad I saw it and will watch the 2nd installment. It was 5 dvds but we really enjoyed the watching the "extras" about Peter, the actors, stage crew and locations.

I was surprised that no one had any holds on it.

Very disappointing adaption of Tolkien's book...

Having read the book I was really excited when I borrowed this movie.

Unfortunately I agree with a comment below. Boring, Boring, Boring!!!

We watched the movie over two nights because it is dragged out so long and still I was struggling to stay awake.

It's odd because even though there is a lot of action it's still boring.

Peter Jackson tried to take a children's book and turn it into some great epic like the Lord of the Rings--which didn't quite work.
I still found it enjoyable, though. Can't wait to see the next part. :) :) :)

Great visuals and acting, but one of the worst editing in cinematic history. Pacing is crucial in a movie and this one is poor edited, creating long lags between brilliant scenes. 3 movies? 2 would have suffice, and been far superior. I don't mind the "to be continued" ending, but felt like it should have been 20-30 minutes shorter. At 2h 10 minutes, this movie would be almost as good as the Lord of the Rings films. Almost. Instead, it's severely bloated, costing it a star (or two) in rating.
