In the latest book in the beloved, bestselling series of mysteries set in Botswana, Mma Ramotswe is asked to help the proprietor of the Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon, who is having trouble with her business. The salon has suffered some unfortunate events, including mistakenly using face creams that burn the skin. Could someone be trying to put them out of business? Meanwhile on the home front, successful career woman Mma Makutsi is going to have a baby. But in Botswana--a land where family has always been held above all else but which is on the crossroads between old and new--this may be cause for as much controversy as celebration.

Was disappointing. A lot of navel gazing and not much story. Ended abruptly.

This series is an entertaining read which is also a reassuring sense that the world is still a good place to be-at least if you are in Botswana. I am so happy I watched the series on HBO and picked up the first book, it has been a delightful respite from the real world.

I was hesitating a bit before picking up the first book in this series because some of the books written by British authors set in India or other former colonies are appallingly racist and xenophobic. I'm glad I didn't stereotype Alexander McCall Smith - he is nothing like the writers before him who find other cultures too exotic or alien, and end up either patronizing them or being horrified by them.

This is a well-written series set in Botswana, Africa that moves at a leisurely pace and is nothing like other books you may find on the shelves titled 'mystery/thriller'. Not recommended for those looking for an edge-of-the-seat thriller.

I was scared to start reading this series as a Zimbabwean born African woman I feared it might be condescending and insulting. I have found the books amazingly uplifting and truly capture the African spirit. I was soo thrilled to be able to meet the author when he was invited by Pierce county library and I apologized to him for judging his books before I read them. They have brought me a lot of joy

Such a great series - I love checking in with this cast of characters - and think of them everytime I shoe shop!

This is now my favorite, after the first in the series. There are several different plot elements that are all warm and funny.

I love all the books in this series. These stories are the equivalent of being safely tucked in a warm bed where nothing bad could ever happen to you. When I need a bit of soothing from the rough world out there, these books are the prescription.

It would be difficult not to love another entry in this popular series, and the latest novel is no exception.

Precious has two cases to solve this time:

• She needs to determine if an heir is who he says he is, and
• She must discover the origin of a smear campaign against the Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon.

To further complicate matters, Grace Makutsi has just given birth to her first child. Without her associate in the office, Mma Ramotswe struggles a little more with these cases than she ought to be.

As always, the cases are solved in a clean and gentle manner. That is the true joy of this series.

This series of books are delightful. They aren't the typical action-packed, danger-deep mysteries we've become addicted to. The pace makes Agatha Christie a role model, but the two towns have very different death rates. Many of the mysteries that Mma Ramotse and Mma Matsuka solve are the mysteries of everyday life.

Mma Matsuka is the perfect companion for Mma Ramotse; her declarations are rock solid and her certainty is unshakeable. Mma Ramotse looks at life with more compassion and uncertainty. Together they form a team that can uncover the truth and deliver the news.

Much of the story includes the personal lives of the two detectives. It is this digression that add texture and flavour to the novel. While reading, I find myself transported from my comfortable western home life and dropped into the sun-filled world that manages, quite well, without a number of items I consider not so much necessary as basics.

A very good book. Not to be missed.
