Really liked this one. Came for the director, because I loved Arrival, stayed because of the actors and the fact that this movie managed to surprise me.

I did not like this movie. Good actors are totally wasted on this. Extreme violence, much too long even though I fast fwd through several of the violent scenes. I did not find the police believable, they turned a blind eye to the behaviour of the father of one of the kidnapped girls. The other couple had no conscience and ignored the extreme behaviour of their friend. All three of them are criminals imho. This movie is a waste of time.

Entire production seemed fake, none of the parents acted logically and typically Hollywood ignores reality. Most people are aware that in the case of a kidnapping the FBI will take the lead in the investigation-they are absent in this story.

Thanks to Roger Deakins’ Oscar-nominated cinematography Denis Villeneuve’s moody whodunnit at least looks good with leaden skies hailing down sleet and wisps of ice fog drifting through a leafless forest. Unfortunately it all falls apart under the weight of its own gravitas as the director, so eager to convey a MESSAGE, throws in red herrings, clever-clever clues, and serpentine twists which seem more concerned with highlighting his protagonists’ demons rather than presenting a logical policer. Keller’s bravado is covering up his feelings of impotence; his wife is surrounded by prescription bottles; the Birches (whose daughter also went missing) have a moral compass spinning out of control; and Detective Loki is dealing with memories of the childhood trauma he himself suffered. Wow, it seems the missing girls are not the only prisoners here and Villeneuve fills every frame with intrusive images of angels and dangling crosses, stately stags and hastily whispered prayers just to make sure we understand there is a spiritual dimension at work beneath all the angry hysterics. As Loki, Jake Gyllenhaal is a conflicted mix of clinical cop and pained participant which never quite rings true while Viola Davis and Terence Howard have better luck as the Birches, their raw suffering providing the film with some much needed ballast. Even Melissa Leo’s small but pivotal role as the prime suspect's aunt, a woman who has already seen too much pain, is almost enough to fill in a few potholes. But in the role of Keller, Hugh Jackman’s raging ball of male machismo is just too much to bear as he bellows and smashes his fists into whatever is handy—I kept waiting for Wolverine’s knives to sprout from his knuckles. In the end, an otherwise sterling thriller is undone by Jackman's stagy emoting and a string of closing solutions which pushed the envelope a bit too far.

Good movie lots of drama would of gave 4 stars but the ending I didn't like.

Hugh Jackman is still in his high masculine misery. I hope a hot detective like Jake Gyllenhaal relentlessly looks for me if I go missing. Good acting but not enjoyable.

Probably the best thing Hugh Jackman has ever been in.

Downer dvd which takes too long to get its message across. Talents of Gyllenhall and Jackman wasted imho.

Are you kidding!?! Absolutely terrible, absurd script. Characters were completely unbelievable. And there are countless unrealistic scenes. (e.g. cops do NOT go into interrogation rooms with guns [guess why...], NO ONE [especially the father of one of the missing girls] would have been able to actually get to the 1st suspect, as he was leaving the police station, etc., etc.)
Also, trying to be convoluted and "tricky", the ending gets more and more ridiculous.
And last, but certainly not least, apparently the writers, producers and director aren't aware of the word "Accessory", as in 'Accessory to Kidnapping & Torture' (the black couple), let alone that the father (white) who directly did those things, would go to Prison for Life, even though "he did what he had to do". (Quote from his wife in the film.)
Then there is the standard Follywood "people who believe in God, and those who actually prepare for disasters (of all kinds) are just crazy & violent". [Hollywood 3:18]
Adding to all those things, it's just a dark, disturbing, disgusting (DDD) story.
