An Amazing story from start to finish. Well written and historically accurate :)

very good story! Throughout the book I've had this sudden urge to use just to see where the website takes me. Should be made into a movie, but you know what will happen when that happens.....

A spellbinding page turner. I couldn't put it down.

You can choose to read this novel as either magical realism or as an allegory. However you choose to read it, though, its power in undeniable. Never before has an author made me fall in love with two characters as quickly as Butler did with Dana and Kevin. Not only does Butler give us to amazing characters who stick with each other and love each other deeply despite extraordinarily trying circumstances, though. She also gives us an incredible narrative. "Kindred" successfully demonstrates the horror and barbarity of the slave system, showing how it was destructive and corrosive to both whites and blacks as we witness characters turn from a innocents to monsters. Despite this, though, Kindred ends with a sense of hope and optimism. In all, an extraordinary book!

Amazing historical/science fiction. I can't believe it has taken me this long to read it. Butler vividly takes us back and forth from the 20th and 19th centuries and you can't avoid the reality of slavery in the nineteenth century. As a avid genealogist, it also made me think about "what-ifs" around meeting our ancestors. Highly recommended, should be required reading for teens and young adults.

Though this is adult fiction, it is suitable for older teens. The unique setting - half Antebellum South and half modern day, is both intriguing and enlightening. It has an empowering message that will particularly appeal to women of color, though all readers can be inspired by this powerful work.

Would you choose a specific historical time period given the opportunity to time travel? Dana is an African American author who mysteriously travels to the early 1800's in Maryland, before the start of the Civil War. She is somehow tied to her ancestor, Rufus, who calls her back to save his life....therefore saving the lives of Dana's own ancestors.

This book is a wild ride as the main character,Dana, is thrown back and fourth in time. She must learn to adjust to slavery in the past, knowing that this is not the best humanity can do. Dana must suffer to insure her time in the present can go back to normal.

Unsure how I have never read this book before. It is astonishing, time travel to antebellum south to her ancestors, a description of how a 20th century black woman could or would adjust to slavery. Wonderful

* Easy to read, hard to put down. Butler's eloquent writing style is simple without being simplistic. She has a talent for getting ideas across with just enough words, no more.

* The book is labeled as science fiction, but really it defies categorization. I think that if you like adventure, mystery, romance, historical fiction, or science fiction, you will like Kindred.

* As far as the science fiction elements go, Kindred explores ways in which time travel might affect everyday lives and relationships.

* None of the characters in Kindred is 100% good or 100% bad. Instead, the characters fall somewhere along a continuum, and they change over time...just like people do in real life.

* This book makes you think about lots of good questions: questions about race relations and prejudice, questions about how our ancestors' lives influence our own, and questions about right vs. wrong. I bet that you'll still be thinking about this book long after you read the last page.
