Add a CommentRead the short essay for each artist, then listen to a sampling of music on the CDs included in the book. Fantastic for fans of oldies, classic rock, folk and R&B who want to share this music with their kids.
Oh, how I would have LOVED this book as a kid! The format is large, coffee-table sized, with gorgeous artwork and a concise essay for each artist. Not only does the book include two CD's for listening right away, but the author includes a "recommended listening" of additional tracks for each artist. Perfect for music appreciation in a classroom!
This is a beautiful book, beautifully illustrated with a very thoughtful selection of musicians and interesting comments on each. This would be a perfect present for a young person, or indeed for anyone.
Although there was only one chapter for each musician, the author was able to convey many thing s to the reader. I really enjoyed how the pages were coloured by the theme of the person, and how there was a quote or title given to each one. it taught me things i never knew about the musicians and introduced me to new ones that ive never really heard of before.
Oh my goodness! This was an AWESOME book. I absolutely loved the "feel" of the book and how the information was presented in an interesting and fun way. From the differing font sizes (which i lovedddd), and the illustrated portraits of the artists, this book showed a different time, with different people. It was truly delightful to "go back in time" to see where the roots of our music today came from. From The Beatles, to the Beach Boys, and James Brown, and Joni Mitchell I loved every single minute reading about the different singers and their unique stories, not to mention backgrounds. I absolutely loved this book. What a wonderful way to represent and show our real "legends, icons and rebels" of the world of music. Best book ever!
A very interesting book talks about important musicians, and their life such as, Bob Marley, The beetles, and many other important musicians. Even though I don't like learning music, I enjoyed learning about the musicians. I also like the Illustrations of the book, they were really nice. In conclusion I enjoyed reading and learning in this book "Legends, & Rebels" A very fine book.
"Legends, Icons & Rebels" has unique formatting and colorful pages that draws the reader in. Personally, I am not a huge fan of music, but this book never bored me and I learned some extremely cool facts. It talks about the world's 20 greatest musicians that changed the musical world, including facts, quotations and interesting tidbits of information at the side. A timeline and 2 CDs are also included so the reader can learn even more about those amazing artists. Finally, this book described the hardships the some of the artists had to go through, such as poverty, skepticism and racism, which made their perseverance and independence so much more admirable.
All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the music world, but even if you're not as interested, this book is still worth reading.
very beautiful page layout some of the greatest artists are in this book and the playlist on the cd's even better truly a work of art
Great book with amazing song selections! Learned a lot more about past music. Wish they included the full playlists in the CD's though. Had tons of fun reading it!
I would have given this book a higher rating, but the topic doesn't interest me too much. That being said, it was a great book. I would really recommend listen to the CDs while reading it. It talks about various musicians that shaped our understanding of music and their experiences. It is definitely a must-read for those who enjoy music from the 20th century, but even for someone like me, who doesn't adore music as much, it made me want to learn more about these people. The book itself was also a pleasure to read. It provided a variety of information and was very colourful and engaging. The only thing is that the author could have written about the various artists in an order, perhaps by time period, so the musical history would have been more clear.
