Chaplin's entire life is covered in the biographical film. From his upbringings in the slums of England to his Honorary Oscar in 1972.

A phenomenal depiction of some of Hollywood's early days, drawn from Chaplin's memoirs (and presented in such a way that it's clear his telling absolutely holds various biases). Robert Downey, Jr., shines as Chaplin himself, but everyone involved is excellent.

Whether it is completely accurate or not, a sympathetic portrait of Chaplin with great heart. Downey's acting is amazing. An amusing conceit is the portrayal of some events as if they were part of a Chaplin silent movie. (It helps to have some knowledge of the Chaplin canon in order to identify the films referenced in this movie, as well as some vignettes that are implied to have inspired some scenes in Chaplin films.)

Excellent extras - including interviews with director Attenborough and a Chaplin biographer, candid and informative; "home movie" by a young Alistair Cooke of Chaplin, Paulette Goddard and Cooke on cruise to Catalina. The biopic includes memorable performances by Robert Downey, Jr., and Geraldine Chaplin. Many interesting people portrayed including Chaplin, his mother and brother; Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford; Paulette Goddard; Oona O'Neill; J. Edgar Hoover, etc.

I have seen this movie so many times and each time I have enjoyed it just as much as the last time. Robert Downey Jr. gives a spectacular performance as the great Charile Chaplin. Honestly one of my favorite biographical films.

Remarkable intimate portrayal of an outstanding public figure.
Robert Downey Jr. became Charles Chaplin without delivering a caricature. Excellent film!

I always thought Richard Attenborough was a terrible director and this film did nothing to change my opinion. But, like Ghandi, the movie is saved by an amazing performance by the lead actor, in this case Robert Downey Jr. There were thousands of Chaplin imitators when Chaplin was at the peak of his fame and popularity but Downey really managed to capture Chaplin's genius. But if you really want to laugh hard and see what all the fuss was about rent Modern Times. Or view the boxing match in City Lights.

Well Done.

Even more impressive than the directing, is Robert Downey Jr's performance.

After the passing of Director Richard Attenborough yesterday, I thought it would be fitting to look at the movies he directed. The list is not long since he was an actor, producer and directors of so many films. "Chaplin" stands out as one of his best films. He formed a wonderful cast with Robert Downey Jr. acting and looking just like Charlie Chaplin. He then had two key co-stars in Chaplin family members Geraldine Chaplin and Sydney Chaplin. Everywhere I check, including the reviews right here on the KCLS web site I find the movie to be very special. Yet KCLS has only two copies and only four holds on those copies. If you have not seen "Chaplin" yet, then I highly recommend it to you. There are few actors that made the impact for so many generations as the "Little Tramp" Charlie Chaplin.

This film is truly outstanding and shows how talented Robert Downey Jr. is, this has got to be one of his greatest performances. The cast do their parts well and the film has been casted well. Every time Downey comes out on the screen you actually believe you are seeing Charlie all over again because of his great portrayal of the legendary comedian. He gets the look and the feeling of Chaplin down to every detail. The film does a great job of portraying Charlie’s personal life, all the trials and tribulations he went through his life. It also shows his friends, family, relationships, and how he started up his studio. As I said earlier everyone they casted played their parts appropriately and have done justice to their roles, but once Downey comes out he just steals the stage and commands a presence like no other. This movie will make you see the life behind one of Hollywood’s most beloved comedian/actor of all time, it wasn’t always laughs there was a lot of darkness in his life. The film shows how he rises to the top and tries to conquer but gets slammed down again, eventually leaving the industry and being banned from America. In my honest opinion I believe this is amongst some the best films I’ve seen in my lifetime, and truly recommend it to anyone, be it fans of Charlie, newcomers, or someone wanting a great film. Overall I give this film a 5/5, it is perfect and I’m glad I got to watch it.

Paulette (referencing his inattentiveness and workaholism): "Did you lose your other wives this way?" Charlie Chaplin: "I think so... but you'd have to ask them."

Douglas Fairbanks: Say, are you two still married or what? I find it all very confusing.
Charlie Chaplin: Mmm... it's not at all confusing. You see, when everyone thought we were having an affair, we were married. Now that everyone realizes we're married, we're getting divorced.
Douglas Fairbanks: Man's a wizard with women. No question about it.
