From Nora Roberts comes the #1 New York Times bestseller Shelter in Place -- a powerful tale of heart, heroism...and propulsive suspense.

It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video-game store tending to customers. Then the shooters arrived.

The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever. In the years that followed, one would dedicate himself to a law enforcement career. Another would close herself off, trying to bury the memory of huddling in a ladies' room, hopelessly clutching her cell phone--until she finally found a way to pour her emotions into her art.

But one person wasn't satisfied with the shockingly high death toll at the DownEast Mall. And as the survivors slowly heal, find shelter, and rebuild, they will discover that another conspirator is lying in wait--and this time, there might be nowhere safe to hide.

Opinion

From Library Staff

Roberts lets the sharply outlined characters, including an unusual villain, take center stage in another tautly plotted page-turner that suspense and thriller readers will love.

It was difficult to read the parts about the shooting, but I liked that the story didn't really focus on that but rather the aftermath with an interesting turn of events. Definitely recommended!

Reed and Simone survived a mall shooting, along with many others. Many died, including the shooters. They survived but not without emotional scars. Reed took that experience and decided his career. Simone ran but her running helped her find what she was destined to do in life. Unfortunately, one person who was not there but helped, decided to administer her own justice after the death of her brother. That person brings a new level of terror to the survivors. As those deal with the new tragedies, Reed and Simone find each other and a new level of being. This book reeled me in and took my heartstrings, tying them in knots, and the emotional ending, whew! Make sure you have tissue.

Despite the grim topic of a mass shooting, it was a surprisingly enjoyable book. I loved the hippy Grandmother that maintained her identity throughout the narrative but found it a bit odd characters with strong personalities were introduced throughout the story, but fell away and were never brought up again (or only in a very vague reference). I have read every Nora Roberts book and agree with the other comments that she seemed to be returning back to more of her original writing style that we all know and love.

Caught my attention from the first and carried it through to the end! Strong characters, great plot!

Three teenagers decide to go on a rampage and shoot up the Rockport Mall. Selina Knox hides in the bathroom and calls 911. Reed Quarermaine finds a little boy and hides him, saving both of their lives. The shooters have shot and killed a lot of people, but are finally killed. Everyone tries to get on with their lives, but there is one person who want to kill the survivors because she believes they should have all died. The race is on to stop her while the body count is rising. This is a very good book from beginning to end

This book was way too long. I enjoyed the characters and the plot of the book, but it could have been done in a much more concise way.

This was a very good read with likeable characters. The killer was really bad and the hero was really good, which is the way it should be.

Not bad - much better than her other recent books. It could have been shorter. The mid-to-last third dragged. It was more an exploration of the two main characters that began when both were young. How events shaped who they each became. Much more of the male perspective, which I liked. Overall not a bad read if you are looking for forgettable beach fluff.

I’ve read many Nora Roberts books and have enjoyed most of them. Shelter in Place is by far the best! Wonderful read.
