A recently widowed marine suffering PTSD from her time in Afghanistan has her service dog kidnapped by a corrupt deputy sheriff who wants to blackmail her into delivering goods allegedly stolen by her husband before his death.
I loved the main characters in this book--they were a mis-match that really worked well together. Then there was the dog, Lucy, who was a scene stealer. The story was suspenseful and I hated for it to be over. Tomorrow I'm picking up the new sequel which I can't wait to start reading--"Lone Jack Trail".
Enjoyable fast-paced thriller with a strong female lead. I enjoyed the banter between Jess and the ex-convict, Burke, as well as the quirks of the dog, Lucy.
... "It's no problem," Burke said. "You hang back here with Lucy, get things ready to go. Soon as I get back, we'll hit the road."
She stood. "That's sweet of you, but no," she said, walking around him to the bathroom. "I know you've been in jail awhile, but they let women do things for themselves now."...

This is my first novel by Owen Laukkanen, and he did not disappoint! I am a huge supporter of Canadian - especially Vancouver, BC - writers. I follow a lot on social media, and I have not yet read all of their books. I try to go in without any expectations as I REALLY REALLY want to love it, lol.
Let's just get this out of the way - there is the bestest dog in this novel named Lucy (named after the author's own dog) and spoiler alert, she makes it! I am so happy to hear this is going to be a series as I love Mason and Jess. Mason, a former convict, trained Lucy in prison, and Jess, a former Marine, is now Lucy's owner (Lucy is a medical dog to aid Jess's PTSD). Mason comes to find Lucy and gets himself in the middle of Jess's standoff with the deputy. I loved the writing and the characters...and the ride to the end! I am excited to see where it goes.
