Inspired by true events, this is the story of Fauna Hodel, a teenage girl who was given away at birth. Fauna lives with the mysteries of her origin, until one day she makes a discovery that leads her to question everything. As Fauna begins to investigate, she meets a ruined reporter, and together they follow a sinister trail that swirls ever closer to an infamous Los Angeles gynecologist, a man involved in some of Hollywood's darkest debauchery, and possibly, its most infamous unsolved crime.

I disliked this series intensely - it seemed to be establishing links to the "Black Dahlia" murder. I did not want to see the young girl come to harm, so I stopped watching. Kristi & Abby Tabby

It is a odd mixture of true crime story of Fauna Hodel, and LA in the 1960's. I hope to read the book to see how much is based on Fauna Hodel's life. They tried to bring out too many issues to stretch out the series to six episodes. Chris Pine was very good in his role as the PTSD stricken reporter chasing the Hodel story.

If you were born in L.A. in the 1950's, and think that L.A. Confidential really captured the city of that time, check out this film. There is something about the direction, lighting, & chosen locations that captures something more, that I cannot explain.

Tense noir with shocking brutality. I found it a bit overdone.

This 6 part series tries to cover a lot of themes, perhaps too many. It's about a cold case. It's about family. It's about a former soldier with PTSD. It's about race relations in 1965 Los Angeles. It's about police corruption, and more. On top of that we have a character who, in a matter of weeks(?) goes from Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz in Nevada, to a sophisticated and worldly Angelino, which is very hard to believe. Where does she get her new wardrobe and hair? Where did she get the time and money to make such a transformation? The audience is asked to ignore these questions for the sake of the story. A bit of a stretch.

L A Confidential. Lots of nasty stuff happens when young women get caught up with rich old men, and corrupt law enforcement.

I enjoy Pine in many productions...no surprise that Patty (director from Wonder Woman) was involved in this. His character is dark, haunted and violent. Not his Captain Kirk character, that's for sure.
Although it's twisted in so many ways, I enjoyed the story.

I thought it was going to be good, but the bad direction and over the top acting by some characters, made me quit after episode three. In fact it was probably one of the worst series I’ve ever watched.

Power never changes. You run with those dogs again, they'll bury you 10 feet deep. It's got nothing to do with right or wrong or the truth. You got to remember who runs this city. Justice in this town is a protection racket.

Come on, explain it to me. What, does he keep your pup-tent warm?
-Look, you weren't there. You ever heard of Dog Company? About what happened on Hill 1240? Dog Company sent 200 guys up that hill, only 16 ever came off. I'm hit in both legs, I'm a dead man. I don't bleed out 'cause the bullet holes froze. I might as well have been on the moon. Are you following this? That flaky shit-bird in there, I seen him with my own eyes, Billis. I seen him run dry and kill God knows how many of 'em Oh, seven or eight of 'em with his entrenching tool. A shovel. Just a little shitty shovel. So he walks while I'm alive.

I hate that car in particular, but without that car, it's nearly three hours on the bus to work and school. Can't be done. I had a flat tire. 12 minutes late, and the manager lodged a complaint. Boy, was he happy to have a reason. All I want to think about is propulsion. Some white men take it personal, like me tryin' to succeed is taking something from them.
-Aren't they all like that?
No. Some don't mind.

I've been in 32 years. Oldest living cop in captivity. I could retire, but I'd start drinking and never stop. I done it all, son. Robbery-homicide, juvenile, vice,..
-So, do you remember the Black Dahlia murder?
Of course! Sure! Wouldn't be an LA cop if I didn't have my own Dahlia story.
Yeah. I knocked on doors. We called it the "werewolf" until the Black Dahlia name hit.

So, how was he supposed to be any different? No pops, mom's on the street.
She used to keep him locked in for days at a time. I came in on him once, and he had a busted foot, all swollen. Been left alone in there for two days. He was eight years old. How was he supposed to end up any different than he was?

There is nothing worse in this world than a literalist thinker. Willful stupidity. I hate talking after these things. Do you even know what that word means? "Literalist".
-Yes, ma'am. It's like when the President said that, "America has tossed its cap over the wall into space." He wasn't talking about a real wall or a real cap. And for your show, I think you just wanted for us to be responsible for you. Joining in, or even just watching, doing nothing. Either way, you would have been the one getting hurt.

Smarter than your mother ever was.

Every white person I know was a liar. And black people were nice to me. In the news, they fought for justice, for equality, they know right and wrong. The name Fauna comes from a Robinson Jeffers poem that I just adored.05

They've never seen it. They feel it, just once at the end. You found out the truth, Fauna. Death and evil, they're around us all the time. And the line between us is, um it's thin as tissue paper. You got the bad news and you got to know it for the rest of your life.
===
The men think they're daring. Talking about free love, walking around naked, thinking that they're pushing the boundaries. You know something about men pushing boundaries, don't you?

-Yeah, maybe.
He would've killed us. God will forgive you.
-God, huh? Yeah. They never talked about how good it would feel. They would never tell you that. It's like riding in the chariot of the sun god. One thing I never expect To enjoy it. You know the one thing I learned in Korea? Good never wins. Right and wrong? I could barely make out dead from alive. Talked to a dead guy for 10 minutes. He was... He was Uh, he was frozen. How are you supposed to make out right from wrong in a place like that? And you pay a price. They own you. You take a life and they come with you. They come with you forever Like little splinters in the heart.

I'm only breathing right now because of what you did. I don't care how it made you feel.
