ECPA 2014 Christian Book Award Winner (Non-Fiction)! Fifty years after his death, C. S. Lewis continues to inspire and fascinate millions. His legacy remains varied and vast. He was a towering intellectual figure, a popular fiction author who inspired a global movie franchise around the world of Narnia, and an atheist-turned-Christian thinker. In C.S. Lewis-A Life, Alister McGrath, prolific author and respected professor at King's College of London, paints a definitive portrait of the life of C. S. Lewis. After thoroughly examining recently published Lewis correspondence, Alister challenges some of the previously held beliefs about the exact timing of Lewis's shift from atheism to theism and then to Christianity. He paints a portrait of an eccentric thinker who became an inspiring, though reluctant, prophet for our times. You won't want to miss this fascinating portrait of a creative genius who inspired generations.

There is a lot to interest a reader in this biography. It may be easier to engage with if you have some familiarity with Lewis as a famous Christian convert. I am not. I came at Lewis through his Narnia series, and McGrath has much to say about these books and his analysis and explanations of the development of this side of Lewis's writing did capture my attention. I found the detailed writing about Lewis's time at Oxford both as a student and as a teacher gave me insight into both this period or time and the way in which Oxford operated. Not an easy read, but skip the bits that aren't relevant to your interests.

I enjoyed this book, but I wouldn't make it your first stop for a biography about C.S. Lewis. It has a bit of an 'inside baseball' feel to it in it's interaction with previous biographies. The author clearly knows Lewis and his works very well and expects that of his readers. However, if you have read his history before you will pick up a lot of interesting new information and insight on him here.
