Set in the 1930's in war-torn China and inspired by true events. George Hogg is a young Englishman who leads sixty orphaned boys on an extraordinary journey of almost a thousand miles across the snow-bound Liu Pan Shan mountains to safety on the edge of the Mongolian desert. During his journey, George learns to rely on the support of Chen, the leader of a Chinese partisan group who becomes his closest friend. He soon finds himself falling in love with the Australian adventurer Lee, an unsentimental nurse. Along the way, Hogg befriends Madame Wang, an aristocratic survivor who has also been displaced by war. She helps the young Englishman, his friends and their sixty war orphans make their way to safety near the western end of the Great Wall of China.

Inspired b y the true events, this film seems remarkable and deeply absorbing.
More than two hours of predictable plot, however, turns out a melodrama of recycled sentimentality---a story of a reckless white adventurer finding redemption and purpose helping the unfortunates in the backward country.

This is a historical movie, the story happened in 1937 during WWll when the Japanese invaded China. Besides Radha Mitchell and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, two famous Chinese stars Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh Chi King were also performed in this film. Well worth watching.

Based on a true story, this film provides graphic images of the horrific violence some humans exhibit when in the grips of war. Parents might want to keep young children from viewing this movie, as among the unsuspecting victims are women and children.

The movie is excellent in its historic information and remarkable topography.
700 miles is a long walk!

Excellent movie and very moving. Highly recommend watching especially to catch a glimpse of the horror of war.

This is a great movie. It's too bad most people are not aware of it and so will never watch it, instead they see lesser-quality but well-marketed movies from Hollywood.

Cannot believe it earned just a PG rating from Canada. Very graphically violent in the beginning.

Really worth seeing!.. An uplifting counterpoint to the despair about all the slaughter depicted in the Japanese invasion of China in WW II. A dramaticly effective tale about personal transformation under stress.
