Honestly... I was just glad to see the acknowledgements pay.

This book seemed like it was an eternity long, slowly torturing me for information that I wanted to provide but had no idea what it was.

The book just didn’t have... appeal. The entire idea was terrific, yet the best part of the story was on the back of the book.

There was No Hook.
No defined plot to follow and help move the story along. Things just happen and then are addressed.
No tension, with lovers / kisses / enemies /the street kids. It was lacking emotion on all fronts.
No conflict: there’s a problem when a street lord gets couriered in an alley and I (the reader) don’t feel his fear. Sure, he got hurt but there was no depth to it... we had no feels on conflict.
No compelling characters or events.
No protagonist. No antagonist.
No emotion. No color. No life. No story.

There was a lot of unnecessary things inside this book that if they were taken out and some depth and world building and character development was put in the series would be a rager.

Unfortunately, The Demon King just fell flat.

The Demon King is one of my all time favourite books. I really like the different perspectives from the two main characters, Han and Raisa. Their lives are so different, yet they also have a lot of similarities. Even though Raisa is a princess and Han is poor, they both make the same enemies and they both are trying to change their actions. This book is absolutely genius because of the different types of people, wizards, valefolk, and clans. The relationships between the people is really interesting to read about. I love the demon king and 100% recommend that everyone reads it. @ToastieTaco of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

New author for me and am glad to have discovered her after the whole series has been published. Looking forward to binge reading the rest !

A pretty decent first novel in a new-to-me teen fantasy series. I didn't love it, but enough intriguing loose ends remained dangling at its conclusion that I'm inclined to pick up book #2.

This was a great introduction to the series that allows us to form a bond with the characters. The world building and character development is spectacular and it only took me a few chapters to be completely engaged in the book. If you love character driven stories and don’t need a book containing a bunch of action, then I think you will love this book! It also has some similarities with Name of the Wind and Harry Potter, so if you like those, then I would try this!

Not bad, but a bit frustrating that the two protagonists are so flawed. Han is definitely the weak link, and Raisa seems to be more focussed on whom she can kiss next. But still, interesting enough where I want to see how the story continues.

I loved this book as it was a darker writing style then Chima's earlier work and ultimately the characters and the story really made me fall in love with the book and I cannot wait to read the second in the series.

YA epic fantasy. Pretty good- characters, several viewpoints, palace and alleys, intertwining of plot and characters. Enough action and suspense to make me want to read the next,
