An old assassin's bullet...the event of the season... November 1885 -- Although Penelope Hamilton Wynch doesn't especially miss her estranged husband, she does yearn for the excitement of the old days when they worked together on assignments from the Pinkerton Agency. Against her better judgment, she agrees to help him on a new case: to go undercover in the household of a wealthy industrial tycoon who's been the victim of factory sabotage and an assassination attempt, just as the family is about to sponsor a cotillion for their debutante daughter. As Pen works the case while dodging her husband's attempts at reconciliation, she encounters another old flame, who happens to be the prime suspect. Is she falling for a would-be assassin? Can she learn the truth before he tries again?

As you can tell from the page count, this is a novella, and the first in a series giving us Penelope Hamilton's background and exciting adventures. We were introduced to Miss Hamilton in the Cordelia Wells series. Miss Hamilton has apparently had other adventures and developed a taste for detective work. First she has to detach herself from a romantic relationship that didn't work out and a bad marriage to Frank Wynch, who recommended her for this job; since he still works for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Both men turn up in this story, and it gives us a chance to assess Pen Hamilton's ambitions in the detective line, and whether she will be sidetracked by either man. She proves herself and gets a referral letter to give to the Pinkerton Detective Agency. The plot covers a surprising number of complications and introductions, considering its limited space. I am eager to follow Miss Hamilton's adventures in this series. Even her reluctant client, who is not without his own secrets, admires her intelligence and persistence in following the clues, however dangerous to her personally, until the murderer is trapped. This was a page turner.
