SUMMARY: "When a monster is born, there are two possibilities..." This story moves through a monster's life from birth to growing up. With each stage, the author presents two possibilities the monster could take and follows one of the two choices.

ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations appear toe mixed media. The pictures are large, very colorful and at times quite silly.

THE GOOD: This story is quite clever. The monster always has two choices to make. The author shows how the choice the monster makes works out even when it is not always what we could consider the best choice. The author based this story on a poem he heard in Brazil called "When a Baby is Born." This book would be an amazing writing prompt for the grade 3-5 classroom. Children could write their own stories with two bends in the road.
THE NOT AS GOOD: There are several instances of the monster eating people. I would caution against reading it to sensitive children under age 5.

AGE RECOMMENDATION: Grades k-2 as well as grades 3-5 as a writing prompt in the classroom
