Anne Rice returns to the mesmerizing storytelling that has captivated readers for more than three decades in a tale of unceasing suspense set in time past--a metaphysical thriller about angels and assassins.

The novel opens in the present. At its center: Toby O'Dare--a contract killer of underground fame on assignment to kill once again. A soulless soul, a dead man walking, he lives under a series of aliases--just now: Lucky the Fox--and takes his orders from "The Right Man."

Into O'Dare's nightmarish world of lone and lethal missions comes a mysterious stranger, a seraph, who offers him a chance to save rather than destroy lives. O'Dare, who long ago dreamt of being a priest but instead came to embody danger and violence, seizes his chance. Now he is carried back through the ages to thirteenth-century England, to dark realms where accusations of ritual murder have been made against Jews, where children suddenly die or disappear . . . In this primitive setting, O'Dare begins his perilous quest for salvation, a journey of danger and flight, loyalty and betrayal, selflessness and love.

It took me a little while to really get hooked onto this story, the pacing at the front feels a little slow, this is a great retelling of a redemption story - imagine It's a wonderful life but instead of a good man, Clarence is trying to help a hitman and there's time travel instead of being erased from existence.

An assassin is offered redemption and reconciliation with his faith by an angel in return for going back in time to prevent a pogrom. Not what I was expecting. I guess I thought it would be more "secular"? Still an interesting read.

A very pretty story, but ultimately it felt full of exposition and empty of emotion. Stuff happens, and it’s written beautifully, but the expository style holds you back from caring too much about the characters and what’s going on, like a light TV show. I wouldn’t change the channel if it came on, but I wouldn’t make a note to watch it either.

For those who did not know, Anne Rice did not convert to Roman Catholicism but returned after 38 year absence. After a twelve year return to mother church, she has now completely renounced her once faithful adherence to this religion. I have been a huge fan of hers, have read most of her novels, regretted that she had returned to RCism myself a permanent apostate from the same religion. I applaud her recenet departure form said religion & look forward to reading her new Wolf series. A tad disappointed with other works but look forward to more of her excellent story telling. A force to reckon with in any case.

A very interesting read. I have read most of Anne Rice's novels and have to say I was just a tad disappointed. The plot...amazing, the characters...amazing; but I felt that it was somehow rushed, that something was missing. That said, I woulddefinitely recommend this.

Very intense and thrilling, great murder mystery type book with a twist of fiction. Gotta love his job.

This was a great story! I love seeing this "other" side of Anne Rice and can't wait to read the next one.

Excellent book!! I have read all of Anne Rice's book and loved the Vampire and witches chronicles. Since she converted I wondered if she would go back to fiction. I'm so glad she did!! Sad but inspiring!
