The Caretaker takes the reader to Boston, Martha's Vineyard, and eventually to India. In an interview on the internet, the author said that the inspiration for this novel had three different sources: 1) His wife's family has a home on Martha's Vineyard, and a family friend was a caretaker during the winter. 2) The seasonal summer workers are Eastern Europeans, Brazilians, and Jamaicans – but the town is quintessentially New England. 3) The main character of the novel was inspired by a store clerk in Cambridge. The man was Sikh, wearing a sticker of an American flag on his turban, and terrified after 9/11. This was the first novel of a three part series.
