This science-fiction satire is proof that, with a well written script and a solid cast of actors (not just names on a poster), a coherent and witty film can come forth. It plays for laughs the conventions any sci-fi fan knows -- in fact, any general viewer would know the typical alien-comes-to-Earth narrative. It has incredibly good special effects, not just considering the leaps and bounds VFX makes as time goes on, but on its own merits. The only embarassment this film suffers is that it was the first in what would turn out to be a franchise of half-hearted films that make lame jokes and erase the true heartstring-tugging message (re: Agent K's future) of the original. You can tune out and enjoy this film, but if you keep your brain ticking, you see multiple levels of wise writing and A-level acting, with so many messages and even more gags that multiple screenings are highly necessary. In the end, this blockbuster truly spells quality -- hard to find, but easy to love.
