The publication “Counting by 7s” by Holly Goldberg Sloan, is a novel about a twelve year-old girl named Willow Chance. She is quite different from kids her age because she she has a high aptitude, that meant that she was gifted with the ability to learn quickly. After taking a standardized test in all of California and getting the perfect score. The principal accused her of cheating and put in a request for willow to get counselling by a councillor named Dell Duke. Dell Duke is also an interesting individual because he has categories of the students he sees but he wasn’t able to put willow in any. This intrigued him to learn more about her. After a while of seeing her, Willow meets a girl named Mai and her brother Quang-ha, Mai and Willow talk to each other very often and so that blooms into friendship. Soon after her parents passed in a fatal car accident. This book was a roller coaster of emotions! It was really enjoyable and I loved the words they used, and I also learned from this book, I would recommend this book for ages 10-16 depending on how well you read. It was a very heartwarming story about a girl who thinks far out of the box trying to understand her new reality! Over all I would give this book a 5/5 and would read again for the amazing plot.-@Mymel0dy of the Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board Counting by 7’s is one of my favourite books that I read during Grade 6. The entire story is perfectly written and portrayed about a girl who is extremely smart, her visits to her guidance counsellor, her parents love towards her, and finding a new home within friendships. I particularly loved how her “gifted” personality was shown, almost as though she never realized how much potential she had and she never felt the need to show it off. Seeing the diversity from the taxi driver to the Vietnamese nail parlour owners to Dell Duke, it seems as though Willow is living a turmoil of emotions and events that are all amazing to read.
