Summary

In the opening of the novel, Lucy and Owen are trapped in an elevator in a citywide blackout. Despite being from two different worlds (Lucy's family is well off and her parents are currently traveling in Europe; Owen's father is in Brooklyn mourning the death of Owen's mother), they enjoy each other’s company and spend the remainder of the evening on the roof of their Manhattan apartment building looking at the stars. However, after the conclusion of the blackout, Lucy moves to Europe to be with her parents and Owen goes on a cross country road trip with his father.
