There is an old saying that the parables are supposed to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. The first comfort to go in Levine's book is a complacent exegesis. Levine offers her own reading of the parables, a reading invested in Jewish scripture. It's a fascinating and eye-opening examination.
