I found this book a little odd overall. The story takes place in British Columbia during World War II. Franny, a young budding writer, lives happily and quietly with her eccentric adoptive parents Sina and Old Tom. Their lives are disrupted when they end up caring for three neighbouring children whose parents have disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The book is odd because it mixes multiple genres and the resulting tone shifts are sometimes jarring. It is a war story, so there are many war references, but the mysterious magical Night Garden introduces fantasy elements which doesn't always mesh well with the serious war elements. There are also sections which are clearly intended to be quirky and funny, but again I found the tone jarring with the serious war story elements. The story was entertaining and fast-paced with interesting characters, so it was a pleasant read.
