The Darkening Age

the Christian Destruction of the Classical World

In this era when children are sent off to summer coding camps, and colleges are rapidly becoming vocational schools, Catherine Nixey is a shining advertisement for a classical education. People like her who can think expansively and communicate lucidly are increasingly rare treasures. With The Darkening Age, Nixey joins a distinguished line of thinkers, beginning with Edward Gibbon, who have stopped to reconsider the Early Christian cultural fables taught in Sunday Schools and adult bible classes (and from many pulpits). Nixey focuses on the acts of vandalism carried out by zealous Christian mobs in the fourth century and later -- the wanton destruction of temples, sculpture, art, and scholarship. A millennium of priceless human achievement simply wiped out in mindless service to the One True Faith. Not a happy story, but an eye-opener for those of us who are not specialists.
