My father lived through the WWII era. He had a vast library of books. As a child I was shown the books and the films. In school when we were taught about WWII I knew more than the average person my age. I could name the Normandy beach heads of Operation Over Lord and knew specific battles and their dates. My father is gone now..but he taught me never to forget what happened. I still have an interest in WWII subjects. I came across this book. I thought I would just skim it. But from start the book had me. I could hardly put it down. I had to know what happened next in their journey ripped from their home, sent to hell and back. When most would fold up and die they kept together the best they could and survived shameful chapter in history. The book is well written. Kept my attention and tugged quite a few times at my heart and produced tears. No gory details but just enough description so you have an understanding of what happened and the emotional trauma of it all.
